Introduction

Puntland Groundwater Monthly Bulletin, produced by PWDA This project was focused on monitoring underground water sources and tracking borehole water levels to enable timely decision-making for improved water access.

this initiative was a pilot project, under the FAO/USAID and Puntland Water Development Agency (PWDA) implemented project that has demonstrated significant improvements in groundwater monitoring.

This bulletin provides an in‐depth overview of current groundwater conditions in Puntland, highlighting several critical findings:

• Groundwater levels remain mostly stable, with notable fluctuations in regions such as Sanaag and Mudug.
• Below-average Deyr rains and projections for Gu’ 2025 indicate limited aquifer recharge.
• Approximately 9% of monitored boreholes are non-functional—primarily due to pump failures, main riser issues, and power supply disruptions.
• Water prices have risen from $0.24 to $0.38 per barrel, reflecting increased demand and climatic stress.
• Seasonal changes in pumping hours and livestock water demand further underscore the region’s vulnerability.

These insights provide a clear picture of our current water resource management challenges and opportunities.” Click here to continue
